11.04.2016 Test shows: Coldenhove’s paper based lidding for push-through- blisterpack far more eco-friendly than aluminium lidding

When it comes to environmental effects, paper based lidding for push-through-blister pack’s is far more sustainable than the current aluminium lidding. On15 out of the 18 investigated environmental effects, paper scores better than aluminium. And on 10 of these 15 effects, the paper based  lidding proved even to be up to four times better than aluminium. The assessment conclusion that paper based lidding has the lowest over-all environmental profile is robust.

As a result of this, Coldenhove Papier can intensify the launch of paper based lidding for push-through-blister pack applications in Europe. Patent is pending. The innovative solution is already utilised by a leading European producer of chewing gum and is available on the Finnish market. Coldenhove anticipates that other companies with sustainability targets, will follow. The company has its focus on manufacturers within the pharmaceutical, food supplements and sweets markets.

These and more results are the outcome of the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), carried out by CE Delft. The LCA was ordered by Coldenhove Papier to substantiate and strengthen her claim that durable paper solutions are a suitable substitute to aluminium on blister packs. Paper lidding  is meant to replace the aluminium found currently on push-through- blister packs, like those used for chewing gum and aspirin.

Furthermore, tests by potential customers in Belgium, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands and Sweden have pointed out that paper lidding runs excellent  on existing packaging lines for blister packs and the change does not require any additional investments.

After being tested in the laboratory under tropical conditions, in accordance with the applicable ISO and ASTM standards, Coldenhove’s paper blister-pack proved to have a water vapour permeability of less than 3 gram/ m²/ 24 hours. An exceptionally good barrier, as far as paper solutions are concerned. In addition, various printing techniques can be applied with excellent results.

The LCA was carried out in accordance with the ISO standard LCA Good Practice, with a 1m² coated paper blister-pack being compared to 1m² coated aluminium-based blister-pack of 20 μm
